Cockatoo Crazy!

Thu Feb 7, 2013, 4:44 PM

Hi, how are you? by ~emmil

Celebrating the Cacatuidae family!

This article will include:

  • Cockatoo info
  • Art features

  • Fun facts

  • Video

What's a Cockatoo?

"Cockatoos are recognizable by the showy crests and curved bills. Their plumage is generally less colorful than that of other parrots, being mainly white, grey or black and often with colored features in the crest, cheeks or tail. On average they are larger than other parrots; however, the Cockatiel, the smallest cockatoo species, is a small bird."

Cockatoos are famous for having big personalities. They live for attention and will go to great lengths to make sure you watch! From wild dancing, to lap snuggles, and often a loud, sharp scream.

Fun Facts

  • The Cockatoo is the only naturally white or naturally pink parrot.
  • A Cockatoo bite is said to be worse than any other parrot's as their lower beak has 2 points, resulting in a 3-point bite if delivered.
  • Cockatoos are more mechanical than many other parrots and will disassemble their toys, your remote control and even their enclosures. They can escape almost any lock!

Perhaps the world's most famous Cockatoo, this little Bare Eyed named Frostie shows off some serious dancing skill!

I adore cockatoos, even though a former friend of mine had one that nearly bit my fingernail off xD

I don't blame him though :D
I was feeding him a peanut and it slipped from my finger. unfortunately he had already begun to grab it and got my finger instead. It did bleed a lot though...

Ooh yay Moluccans! The snuggle beasts :D I'm hoping to get one in the future too! I raised an Umbrella for the first 6 years of his life and immediately fell in love with cockatoos. They're so wonderful  Good luck with your future moluccan! :squee:

I love Cockatoos they're so intelligent. I have a memory from when I was younger of a Cockatoo that used to come to our house every day at the same time for dinner and head scratches ^^

Also fun fact (if you haven't already heard this one): Did you know here in Australia there's a myth to do with the black red or yellow tailed cockatoos? If you see them flying high in the sky it's supposed to be a sign there is rain coming, and the number of them flying together is how many days it will rain for. Some people think it's silly but whenever I've seen them rain hasn't been too far behind!

It is a shame, I find it very saddening that a lot of Australia's native creatures are endangered in their own home because of human development and introduced species :(
